Drone spraying purified water across a pitched roof solar array

Solar panel cleaning by drone

Clean panels make more electricity. We wash yours with purified water from a drone, so nobody climbs on your roof and nothing scratches the glass.

For every size of system

From a 10-panel home roof to a field of ground-mounted arrays. On larger sites a drone is often the fastest and safest way to reach every panel.

Estimate your power loss

Dirty panels can lose a noticeable share of their output. Set your system size and how dirty the panels look to see roughly what that costs you each year.

How we clean

Gentle on your panels, thorough on the dirt.

  • We look before we clean. A drone survey records any existing cracks, loose fixings or damage, and we tell you before we start.
  • Purified water. Our water is filtered to remove minerals, so it dries without spots or streaks.
  • Low pressure, no contact. A soft spray lifts dirt without brushes on the glass or jets on the seals.
  • Biodegradable products only where needed. For stubborn bird fouling or lichen, and only where the manufacturer allows it.
  • A safe working area. We plan every flight, check the airspace and keep people clear while we work.
  • Checked afterwards. We inspect the result and send before-and-after photos.

Solar Health Check: clean and check in one visit

A clean makes your panels shine. A health check tells you whether the whole system is working. You get both from one visit, with a report you can keep.

What you see: a bird dropping and dirt along the bottom edge.
What a thermal camera sees: the covered cell is running much hotter.

Why debris shortens panel life

Dirt doesn't just block light. Patchy debris like bird droppings, leaves and moss can damage the panel underneath.

Each panel is a chain of cells. A covered cell can't produce power, so it resists the current from the rest of the chain and turns it into heat. This is a hot spot.

Over months, hot spots can discolour and crack cells, blister the backsheet and wear out the panel's bypass diodes. That means lower output for the rest of the panel's life, and in bad cases a panel that needs replacing.

Even dirt that builds up along the bottom edge of a low-angle panel has the same effect on the bottom row of cells. Regular cleaning removes the cause. A thermal scan in our Solar Health Check shows whether damage has already started.

Keeping your warranty safe

Solar panels usually come with a 10 to 15-year product warranty and a 25-year performance warranty. Cleaning the wrong way can put them at risk.

Most manufacturers publish cleaning instructions in their installation manual. They commonly rule out high-pressure washers, abrasive brushes or pads, strong detergents and solvents, and standing or walking on the panels. Some also set limits on water hardness and temperature.

Before we clean, we identify your panel make where we can and follow that manufacturer's guidance. If you have your warranty paperwork, send it to us and we'll check it for you.

After every visit you receive a dated report with photos of the panels before and after cleaning, plus any damage we found. If you ever need to make a claim, you have a record showing the system was looked after properly.

It depends on what's around your panels. These are the intervals we recommend as a starting point. We'll adjust them after your first visit.

Solar cleaning questions

Is drone cleaning as good as hand cleaning?

For normal soiling such as dust, pollen, droppings and light lichen, yes. Purified water dissolves and lifts the dirt and dries clear. For very heavy, long-neglected build-up we may recommend a biodegradable pre-treatment or a second pass, and we'll tell you before we start.

Do you use chemicals?

Usually not. Purified water does most of the work. Where stubborn fouling needs it, we use a biodegradable cleaner approved for solar panels, and only if your panel manufacturer allows it.

Where does the water go?

We use only what's needed, typically a few hundred litres for a large job. Purified water with no chemicals runs off into your gutters like rain. Where products are used, we plan how to contain the runoff as part of the site risk assessment.

Can you clean panels in winter?

Yes, as long as it's above freezing and the wind and rain allow us to fly. Cleaning in late winter or early spring means your panels are clear before the long, sunny days.

Can you clean my roof or gutters at the same time?

Mention it in your quote request. We can inspect your roof and gutters on the same visit, and we're adding drone roof cleaning to our services.

What if you find a fault?

We'll mark the exact panel in your report with photos and thermal images. We don't carry out electrical repairs, but your installer or an MCS-certified electrician can use the report to fix it quickly.
